Here is my themed Christmas Tree!
This year for Christmas was my first year decorating a themed tree. This is my first year actually having more then one tree as well. Our New Place has much more space then any other house we have lived in, so it is really the first year that we could actually have more then one tree. Now I will always plan on having our family Christmas tree with all of our special ornaments, but it was really fun to decorate a themed tree this year as well!
My tree theme goes right along with the theme in my living room this year which is a rustic ski lodge theme. It was all inspired by a pillow that I bought from T.J.Maxx. You will see the pillow when I reveal my whole living room, which will be very soon! It gave me my color scheme of dark greens and wood tones.
I love the look of over the top tree’s that make you say – WOW – without even thinking about it, but I didn’t think that style fit my theme this year. I was also starting completely from scratch and didn’t want to spend all of my money on just my tree decorations this year. So I opted for a more simple style tree.
It was so fun to decorate the tree and a bit challenging too. I had never done a themed tree before so I felt a little lost as to where to start. I have only ever decorated our family Christmas tree that doesn’t have two of the same ornaments and is put together in random order. I decided to start how I have always started my trees and that was with the lights and go on from there.
After the lights came the garlands. The dark green plaid ribbon, which matched my theme perfectly, is from the new Hearth and Hand line at Target.
The book page garland was a DIY project. I will be sharing how I put it together soon!
Once the garlands were up I put on the ornaments. I figured how to balance the ornaments and the certain colors and textures as I went along. Which means there was a lot of moving things around until it looked right and I didn’t have to much of the same thing near each other.
The dark green color ornaments were the hardest to locate. All the stores had the regular ‘Christmas Green’ colored ornaments but I needed a dark green. After a lot of digging I found some dark green glass ornaments at Walmart. I could only find the brown ornaments in the plastic shatterproof style so that’s what I went with. They are from Walmart as well.
The black ski ornaments I found in the Target dollar spot, they were the perfect addition to the tree. It gives it the perfect ski lodge feel.
The wooden snowflakes were a last minute addition to the tree. I actually had them hanging on the wall above a little ski lodge cabin vignette that I put together. I searched all over the place for ornaments that were going to add some wood texture to the tree, and also fit in my budget. I found several pretty ornaments that I would have loved to add to my tree but at $10+ an ornament it just wasn’t in my budget. I decided to use what I already had and added the wooden snowflakes to my tree. The large and small wooden snowflakes I picked up from T.J.Maxx.
The wooden box that the tree is sitting is was a free curb side find by my husband. I used the box last year for our family tree but decided to use it on this tree instead this year. I absolutely love using this over a tree skirt. The tree skirts in the past always got flipped or bunched up and I had to constantly fix them. The dogs on the other hand loved the tree skirt and thought it was their personal blanket to sleep on. Which means it got dog hair on it all the time. I think I spent more time cleaning it then it was actually on my tree. Needless to say I love having this not so little wooden box to put our tree in!
I hope you enjoyed seeing my first ever themed Christmas tree! I had a lot of fun putting it together and I am so excited that I get to be a part of this Christmas Tree Blog Hop!!
