DIY Ribbon Flag Supplies
I know this is called a ribbon flag, but I didn’t actually use any ribbon in my flag at all. For the size flag that I wanted, Ribbon would have been quite pricey. If you are going to make a smaller version of this flag you could use ribbon without it costing a lot.
- Fabric in Red, White and Blue
- Ribbon (optional)
- Decorative Trims, such as lace or pom poms
- Large Jute Tassel
- Wooden Dowel or stick
The amount of your supplies will be based on how big of a flag you make. My flag is 3 ft long and a little under 2 feet wide. I bought 1/4 of a yard of each of my fabrics and 3 yards of my lace trim.
I cut my strips of red and white fabric in varying sizes from 1.5 inches to 2 inches wide by 36 inches long. If you have a rotary cutter it will make cutting it go by more quickly and you will have straighter lines. I cut mine by hand and did my best to keep my cutting lines straight.
I then tied my strips to my wooden dowel. I tied my strips of fabric so that the knot did not have any extra. To do this you simply tie the fabric around the dowel and pulled it so that the small end of the fabric gets caught in the knot. This will give your fabric a clean line at the top.
For the blue fabric I cut it to a size that looked right for my flag. It is around 8 x 12 inches. I then sewed some white mini pom trim along the top of it leaving long tails on each end. I used the tails to tie the blue fabric to the flag.
I then added my jute tassel to the side of the flag and cut off the excess string. I found my Jute tassel at Joann Fabrics. It was in the trim by the yard section.
I absolutely love this tassel!
My original plan was to add some red and white tassels on the side, but that all changed once I found this!
Tie a pieces of skinny trim or ribbon to your wooden dowel and your DIY ribbon flag is ready to be hung up!
