Kentucky Derby Party

Kentucky Derby party ideas to help you throw the perfect derby party!

This past weekend we hosted a Kentucky Derby Party and it was a blast!

Going to the Kentucky Derby has been on my bucket list for some time, so when my husband suggest we host a Kentucky Derby party I thought that it was a great idea!

If you have ever wanted to go to the Kentucky Derby I suggest you host a party on race day and invite all of your friends and family. Planning an putting together this party was so much fun.

We couldn’t go to Churchill downs to enjoy the race this year, so I did as much as I could to bring Churchill Downs to us!

Welcome to my Kentucky Derby Party!

The guests were greeted at the door with a Rose and moss horse head wreath.

{ I will be sharing how I made this cute

horse head wreath for on the cheap in my next post! }

The winners Trophy collection and a few roses short of the winners rose garland decorated the entrance way.

I came across this jockey and horse shoe horse tack in an antique shop and knew that it would be a perfect fit for the party.

The Churchill Downs sign was made out of some scrap wood that I had in the garage. I hand painted the letters on and then distressed it with my Ryobi Orbital Finishing Sander. (affiliate link)  I left a bit of the dust on the sign to give it more of an aged weathered look.

The living room got a few subtle touches of the Kentucky Derby to it as well.

I added a few derby touches in the dining room, but I forgot to take a picture of the actual dining room table. So just imagine cute little mason jars filled with two dozen roses running down the middle of the table.

The black metal horse belonged to my Great Grandpa and was passed down to my Dad, who then passed it down to my son. It is actually a piggy bank that can maybe hold a dollars worth of quarters.

Downstairs is where the main part of the party was at so I had to add some fun Kentucky Derby party decorations down there as well.

I created my own version of horse betting for the Kentucky Derby. I made a stat sheetof each horse racing in the derby and matched them with their post number. My guests then picked the horse they wanted to win the derby and took the mason jar below with the horses post number on it to use as their cup for the day. The person with the winning horse got the basket of goodies in the center of the table to take home!

The vinyl decals I custom ordered from The Word Nerd Studio on Etsy.  The vinyl decals came on a roll ready for me to apply.

It was a really fun and easy way to label the cups and my guests loved them!

I made a whole southern Kentucky Derby spread to eat for the party. Bourbon meatballs, Hot Brown sandwiches, Benedictine dip, Cheese grits, pecan pie bars, Kentucky bourbon butter cake….you get the idea. My favorite by far were these Kentucky derby sugar cookies that I ordered from the Knotty Pine Bakery. Not only did they look amazing, – Even after my two year old decided to play smoosh all the rose cookies- but they tasted wonderful as well! These were the first things to be finished off!

Of course having all of our friends show up dressed to impress just made the day perfect.

Our whole group all together, well minus my five year old who took the picture. Which is why I am in an odd pose. lol! I was running back and forth moving her hair and finger out of the way as well as coaching her through taking the picture.

I love it and I can’t wait to see how our group continues to grow over the years!
