Under the Sea Mermaid Bedroom Paint Colors & ORC Week 3

Hi Everyone!

You may have noticed that there is no week two post for the One Room Challenge. I had the best intentions to post for week two and well I was so Easter focused that the week passed me by.

Things are back on track now!  I did spend my time wisely this week by doing lots of shopping for Arianna’s room. I found some really great decor items for her room, but you are going to have to wait to see them because that is not this weeks topic. This week’s topic is all about paint!

This is what Arianna’s room looked like when we bought our house.

One wall was Barney purple and the other, cookie monster blue as I called them.

Here is Arianna claiming her room the day we went to view the house. Even at 2 years old she knew exactly what she wanted and how to get it. Like camping out in the closet the entire time we were at the house and refusing to leave when it was time to go because she had found the room she wanted.

Sometime during last summer I went ahead and primed Arianna’s room. I actually spent the entire day priming her room with a little spider friend sitting underneath that red solo cup. I very much dislike killing any sort of bug, so the spider remained there until he could be relocated outside.

Speaking of Primer, If you are looking for a good primer affordable primer I recommend Zinsser Primer. It only took two coats to cover the blue wall in Arianna’s room. I used a different primer for Ryder’s Little Explorer Bedroom which started off with two walls in the same cookie monster blue. It took me around 6 coats of another primer before you didn’t see any blue coming though. That was a lot of time spent just priming two walls.

After I got done putting up one coat of the teal paint I was a little concerned that it was a bit brighter then I thought it should be.

I mean the paint in the can looked almost white, but once it hit the walls it was really teal.

In your face teal.

I added a second coat hoping that it would calm it down. I figured I didn’t mix it enough, even though I used it the same day that I bought. The paint would have been mixed pretty well already.

Once the second coat of paint dried I was still left with an in your face….Bam… teal room.

It was so bright it cast a teal aura into the the hall.

I went back and checked my paint samples to my paint can and sure enough, I had the wrong color.

I had painted the room in Benjamin Moore’s Jamaican Aqua, which was one shade darker then I had wanted. I had wanted to paint the bedroom in Benjamin Moore’s Barely Teal.  As you can see from the color card there is quiet a difference in tone. I was so done with the room that I just left it as is with its glowing teal aura.

I am happy to say that the room no longer has a teal aura that it is casting into my hall, nor does the room jump into your face. When I bought the paint this time I triple check when I told them what color I wanted. I checked it once more before I brought it home. I did not want to paint this room a fourth time.

There was a world of difference in the feel of the room as I painted.

The room when from a loud in your face teal to a relaxing and calming teal. This bedroom was now a haven to come and unwind in and all I simply did was change the color of the paint.

Paint can really transform a space and add to the overall atmosphere of a room.

I wanted a room color that was going to be able to feel relaxing and also add to the atmosphere of  my mermaid bedroom theme and that is why I think Barely Teal by Benjamin Moore is the perfect paint color for a little girls mermaid room.
