Today I will be sharing with you the custom stain that I made to use one my Side Table. I looked at Home Depot for a stain similar to the Everett table from World Market. However after looking into it, it doesn’t seem as if the table is stained, and that the color comes from the type of wood that they used. I have not seen the table in person so I do not know for sure, but that is the conclusion that I came to.
The only thing I could do was to get a stain close to the color as possible. I grabbed a Minwax Stain in Weathered Oak. However when I tested it on a scrap piece of wood, it was much lighter then I was wanting. It wasn’t a warm brown. It had more grey tones in it. I needed it to have a deeper tone. The only other stain I had on hand was a Minwax stain in Special Walnut. Special Walnut is a very dark brown stain. It is what I used on the shelves in my Little Explorer Boys Room.
Then I had the idea to mix the Weathered Oak and the Special Walnut stains together!
Creating a Weathered Walnut DIY Stain.
This DIY stain has warm brown tones but also had this beautiful grey tone in certain areas, such as the details on the legs of the table.
The stain will take differently to different types of wood, so be sure to test your stain on scrap pieces of wood first prior to applying it to your entire project. For my table I had to add 3 coats to the top and base box and only one coat to the legs and frame, due to the different types of wood.
After playing around with the stain for a little bit I got the perfect amounts to make the Weathered Walnut stain.
DIY Weathered Walnut Wood Stain mix:
– 1/8 cup Weathered Oak Stain
– 1 tsp Special Walnut Stain
That is the amounts that I used for my DIY stain color for my Side Table.
I did have someone ask what the formula amounts would be to make a quart of Weathered Walnut stain and for a whole gallon of Weathered Walnut stain so I went ahead and figured out the math so you don’t have to!
To make a quart of this DIY Weathered Walnut Stain you would need:
– 1 Quart Weathered Oak Stain
– 11 Tablespoons (5.3oz) Special Walnut Stain
To make this DIY Weathered Walnut Stain in a large gallon quantity you would need:
– 1 Gallon Weathered Oak Stain
– 2 2/3 cups (21.3oz) Special Walnut Stain
I would love to see the projects that you use this DIY stain on! Send your pictures to Jaclyn@one-Thousandoaks.com and I will feature them here in this post!
